“The Past Isn’t Dead. It Isn’t Even Past.” -Faulkner
The interconnection between the present, past, and future define Ren’s plays. Through individual and familial stories, trenchant societal narratives, and chronicles of international cross-currents, Ren’s plays explore how history is a constant influence in our lives, the container in which human impulses, desires, and aspirations germinate.
His love affair with theater was sparked by Henry David Hwang’s iconic Broadway production, ‘M. Butterfly.’ While earning his living as a professional writer and editor, he has an abiding interest in writing for theater. He is committed to bringing new stories to the stage, firmly believing that plays are unparalleled in their ability to encourage reflection and understanding of currents that impact us.
Having settled on the Northern California coast after living in numerous corners of the country, Ren’s own hyphenated American identity, and his family’s immigration story, connects him to the global ebbs and flows defining community, citizenship, and the very essence of belonging. These personal connections deeply inform his work, imbuing it with a richness and authenticity that resonate with diverse audiences.
Ren’s play, “The Recall,” was workshopped at the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre and had a live staged reading on August 12, 2023. It explores the multi-layered complexities of community and politics.
As an Associate Member of the Dramatists Guild and a Member Playwright at the Playwrights Center in Minneapolis, Ren is dedicated to bringing fresh narratives to the stage. His involvement with the National Committee of the Bay Area Playwrights Foundation as a reader further underscores his commitment to fostering new voices in theater.
A graduate of NYU, Ren’s unique perspective and multi-layered explorations of identity and society invite audiences to engage, question, and empathize with the human experience. Through his plays, he aims to entertain and enlighten those who experience his work.
